Which Works: Running or Walking ?
The truth is that both work. If you are a beginner, then walking can be the best choice of physical activity. As we progress, the choice between Running or Walking has to be made in a wise manner keeping the end goal in mind.
If you want to be a better walker, then the best choice is to cover ‘10000’ steps everyday looking at the screen of your new fitness gadget. But if the goal is to lose fat and become fit, at some point you have to progress from 3o – minute walks to a slow jog. From jog, you progress to strides and finally some sprints. If you implement this pattern of progression without being very aggressive, then the only side effect is lowered fat percentage and a better looking body.
Millions of people get trapped in the concept of the ‘fat burning zone’ promoted by the internet gurus. At a heart rate zone of 100 – 120 bpm, the major source of fuel burned may be fat for a duration 30 minutes. But the overall calorie burn at the end of a 30 minute walk will always be lesser than the total calories burned for the same 30 minutes if you were running. At the end of the day, what matters is the total number of calories burned and not the source of fuel utilized.
A walker’s concept of ‘something is better than nothing’ works in his favour only till the body gets adapted to the intensity. As we repeat the activity from time to time, the exercise economy improves and you will only burn fewer calories than what you used to burn in the first week for the same activity.
So stop worrying about the ‘fat burning zone’ and get your feet moving a little faster. Happy running!
